Internet2 is working to bring a hybrid cloud environment to its community of research and educational institutions.

The technology community has partnered with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of Texas at San Antonio, the University of Notre Dame, and Rackspace Hosting to build a new OpenStack-optimized hybrid cloud environment.

OpenStack is open source software for building private and public clouds. The service will aid institutions in their efforts to use the cloud for big data research. Institutions will be able to connect their private clouds to the Rackspace public cloud using Internet2's secure high-performance network, and then researchers can use regional, national, and global research and education networks to create hybrid clouds.

Researchers will have an opportunity to conduct research faster and on a broader scale when the service is available next spring. The service will be part of Internet2's NET+ program, which "provides access to a portfolio of 'above the network' cloud-based services," says Internet2.
