University of Technology, Sydney (UTS) researchers are developing a smartphone application designed to help online clothes shoppers get the purchase right the first time. The app uses augmented reality imaging, which is a composite of virtual and true reality.

The researchers faced several challenges in developing the app, including identifying physical specifics and removing extraneous background "noise," matching clothes to the human form, and allowing for the clothes to track body movements.

Going forward, retail investors will guide the research, as any clothing database paired with the augmented reality shopper app must be able to adapt to retailers' needs.

UTS marketing expert Bruce Perrott says this type of app could capture the imagination of young, fashionable women who enjoy shopping online as well as in brick-and-mortar shops. Now that the app has received concept approval on certain key technology, that target market is the key to bringing the app to life.

"Our aim now is to attract attention from industry...there is a lot of space for development and IP generation," says UTS professor Jian Zhang.
