FAA Moves Toward Certifying Specific Drones for Package Deliveries

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has proposed new safety standards for specific unmanned-aircraft models, marking a significant step toward eventually authorizing drones to deliver packages to consumers across the country.
The proposal is also a major policy and regulatory win for Amazon, UPS, and other companies seeking to gain approval for various types of drones and small-package delivery fleets.
The announcement emphasized that the FAA still has much work to do on several operational issues. For example, the agency needs to complete rules for remote identification of more than 400,000 drones registered for commercial operations.
The FAA said its ultimate goal is to promote full integration of a range of drones and autonomous airborne taxis into U.S. airspace.
