The U.K. Is Building Its First Commercial Quantum Computer

U.K. science minister Amanda Solloway says Britain's first commercial quantum computer, supported by government and industry, will be available for use by businesses within several years.
Partners and clients will access the system through the cloud to run machine learning, materials simulation, and finance applications.
California-based Rigetti Computing will develop the computer over the next three years, collaborating with U.K. organizations like the University of Edinburgh, Oxford Instruments, and Standard Chartered Bank.
The system will be housed in extremely low-temperature refrigerators to ensure better quantum-bit control, so the hardware can run on the Quantum Cloud Services platform, with access facilitated by classical computing resources over the cloud.
Solloway said, "Our ambition is to be the world's first quantum-ready economy, which could provide U.K. businesses and industries with billions of pounds worth of opportunities."
