Computational Modeling Explains Why Blues, Greens Are Brightest Colors in Nature

University of Cambridge researchers used computational modeling to determine why blue and green are the most vivid natural hues occurring in nature.

Researchers from the U.K.'s University of Cambridge have demonstrated via computational modeling why blue and green are the most vivid natural hues, by ascertaining the limits of saturated, pure, and matt structural color.

Structural color is caused by internal structure alone, with appearance determined by nanoscale structural arrangement.

The researchers simulated the optical response and color appearance of nanostructures as found in nature, and learned that saturated, matte structural colors cannot be reproduced in the red region of the visible spectrum.

These findings could be helpful for developing non-toxic paints or coatings with intense color that never fades.
