Wisconsin tility Testing Online Energy Monitors

A Wisconsin utility is joining an energy-efficiency initiative that allows customers to monitor their home's power use online, through an iGoogle gadget. Google's new PowerMeter takes information on a customer's hourly electricity use and sends it to Google — and then to a customer who can view it on a home computer.

The project is now limited to about 50 people, many of them employees testing the technology. The utility is one of eight around the country to participate in the Google program. "We want to test how it works and see how the customers' experience is and then decide whether this is something we want to roll out or not," said Barb Nick, senior vice president at Wisconsin Public Service Corp.
