Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Demos

Emergence of AI technologies has inspired many advocates of democracy to seek solutions for contemporary challenges from new AI tools.

Instead of creating algorithms that exaggerate the concentration of wealth and power to the elite at the expense of modern democratic values, we could use artificial intelligence (AI) to embrace pluralism and strengthen multidisciplinary democratic deliberation, participation and even legitimacy, ending up with better lives for all.

To do so, we should start by defining the common values and principles we want to preserve in AI development. From there, the societal structures that support the preservation of these goals need to be established in multidisciplinary collaboration. Finally, AI should be aligned with the common values and principles and operationalized in a way that supports the societal structures, from development to application and evaluation.
